Artist's Biography

Mae Jean (Burch) Gregg

Mae Jean painted her first oil at age 14, having enjoyed doing pencil sketches of classmates in grammar school. She went on to Mississippi Southern College (now the University of

Southern Mississippi) as an art major and studied drawing

and painting at the University of California at La Jolla.

Mae Jean continued to hone her skills throughout her life while raising a family of four girls. With her daughters now grown Mae Jean has once again focused her energy on her passion for oil portraiture. She completed a workshop with DANIEL GREENE, renowned American portrait artist, and has recently completed her final year of full-time study at the CHARLES H. CECIL Studios in Florence, Italy. The studio is a school of fine art in the naturalistic tradition with a curriculum based on the classical techniques of drawing and painting. While there she polished her skills painting oils of figures and portraits from live models, using the sight-size method and techniques of the old masters.

Mae Jean specializes in portraits painted from live models using the Rembrandt lighting technique. She resides in Atlantic Beach, Florida, with her husband.
